Family Therapy for Young People with an Eating Disorder
Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches for treating eating disorders in children and teens. Instead of asking your child to fight this illness alone, FBT places you, the parent, at the centre of recovery. With the right guidance and support, you become the best resource to help your child heal.

Eating disorders thrive in secrecy and isolation. But no one knows your child better than you. In FBT, parents are given the tools, confidence and structure to take an active role in supporting eating and restoring health.
It’s not about blame, it’s about empowerment. You already have the love and commitment; Hannah's job is to help you channel that into recovery.

What you Need to Know to Truly Understand your Child's Eating Disorder
What Does Treatment Look Like?
1
Restoring Health
Focus: Helping your child return to a healthy weight.
What happens: Parents take the lead in supporting and supervising meals. Hannah will guide the family in strategies to manage eating, monitor progress, and reduce eating disorder behaviours.
Goal: Ensure your child’s physical health and safety, which is the first step toward recovery.
2
Returning Responsibility
Focus: Gradually giving your child responsibility for eating.
What happens: As your child starts to gain weight and show more consistent eating habits, parents slowly hand back control of meals and food choices. Hannah will support both you and your child during this transition.
Goal: Help your child develop independence and trust in their ability to manage eating.
3
Beyond Food & Weight
Focus: Addressing the broader issues beyond food and weight.
What happens: Hannah will work with the family to face challenges such as emotional coping, relationships, and identity, while reinforcing healthy behaviours and communication.
Goal: Strengthen your child’s emotional and social development, helping the whole family thrive post-recovery.

Giving Back
I believe recovery is about community and support, not just individual therapy. That’s why I donate $1 from every session to the Butterfly Foundation, Australia’s leading charity for eating disorders and body image concerns.

Your sessions not only support your own healing but also help fund vital services such as the national helpline, community education programs, advocacy, and research.
These donations make sure that people all over Australia, no matter their background, can access hope, resources, and support when they need it most.
Together, we’re creating change and making recovery possible for more people
